Instead of “I have to” take on this challenge, try “I get to” take it on. I get to fool around with possibilities. Model going from “oh, no” to welcoming the excitement of figuring it out.

Challenges can be pure joy and awe for these children! That is, until they are not. The contrast of what they expect of themselves – and of others – relative to the actual situation is a frontal assault on their identity and on their place in the world. Adults’ modeling how to experience and honor their own intensity and how to navigate through it is crucial.
